Windows 11 has entirely refreshed the right-click or the context menu in Windows 11 and has replaced it with a completely new menu. While this new redesign has removed some unnecessary shortcuts and options, the new look can be a bit daunting at first. Thankfully, it can be easily customized to suit your needs.

There are two ways to go about it. You can either revert to the old Windows 10 style context menu and add your favorite app list. Or, you can add the new apps directly. The only catch is that the apps will appear when you click on Show more options.

Either way, you can add and remove apps as per your preference.

Here’s how to change and customize the right-click menu in Windows 11.

HOW TO BRING BACK THE OLD CONTEXT MENU IN WINDOWS 11

The ‘Show More Options’ option is annoying. For example, I have to click numerous times to send a file to my phone. And when that happens a dozen times in a day, it can get annoying.

There are two ways to bring back the old Windows 10 context menu. You can either edit the Registry Editor entries. Or, you can tweak the Registry keys directly via Command Prompt. The second step is easy.

The Windows Registry Editor is the hub of all Windows settings. And if you know the right key and value, you can customize some parts of your PC as per your preference.

However, editing the Registry Editor is no child’s play, and playing with the wrong key & value set may break your computer.

Note: Take a backup of the Registry before you make any changes.

Step 1: Click on the Windows button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Step 2: Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID

Step 3: Once the path opens, right-click and select New > Key.

This will create a new key on the left panel. Once done, rename the key with the following name,

{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}

Step 4: Select the newly-created key, and then right-click on the right panel, and choose New > Key.

Now, rename the newly created key to the name below,

InprocServer32

Step 5: Select the newly-created InprocServer32 folder and right-click on the Default value. Once done, select Modify.

Keep the Value Data field empty and hit the Ok button.

All you need to do is restart your Windows 11 laptop/PC to be welcomed with the old context menu.

To bring back the new context menu, delete the InprocServer32 key.

ALTERNATE ROUTE: VIA COMMAND PROMPT

If you do not want to mess around with the Keys and Values, you can add the keys directly via Command Prompt.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt and paste the following command:

reg add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve

This simple action will add both the keys in the correct sequence.

Step 2: Restart the computer and that’s about it.

This is a much faster method.

HOW TO ADD AND CUSTOMIZE THE RIGHT-CLICK MENU

Once you have the old context menu, you can tweak it to add a couple of your frequently-used apps. The apps will appear in the first menu, saving you time in the long run.

Do note that you can add only apps and not folders and files. For the latter, you have to take the aid of the Taskbar.

Like the method above, adding apps to the context menu in Windows 11 also involves editing the Registry entries. We’ll be adding two apps in our example, namely Notepad and Calculator.

Step 1: Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the path below:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell

Step 2: Right-click on the right panel, and add a new Key. Name it ‘Notepad.’

Double-click on Default and add ‘&Notepad’ under Value data.

Step 3: Select the newly created key, and right-click again to add a new key underneath the Notepad folder. Rename it as ‘command.’

Double-click to modify the Value and add the following under Value data.

Notepad.exe

Head back to the desktop and right-click to see the new values in the context menu.

Repeat the steps to add apps like Calculator or MS Word.

Note: To remove an app from the right-click menu in Windows 11, remove the entries under the Shell folder.

Again, we’d advise you to take a backup before you remove any keys.

You can also add the apps directly to the right-click menu in Windows 11 without reverting to the old menu,

The right-click menu, also known as “Context Menu” appears when you press the right button of your mouse. The context menu will give you more shortcuts over the selected item. You can also open the context menu by pressing the keyboard key if the relevant key is available on your computer’s keyboard. You can right click on the desktop, a file, folder or a program in Windows PC. This article explores various methods of personalizing the right-click menu in Windows 10 or 11. Also, learn how to add Save As menu in macOS Apps.
Why Should You Modify Right Click Menu?
Below is a sample menu that will appear when right-clicking on the empty area of File Explorer.
Right Click Context Menu
Remember, different applications installed on your PC may modify menu items in the context menu. Though very helpful when you want to perform various actions on a file or an app, the context menu can be overloaded with so many options that you do not even use. However, you can customize it by either removing, adding or renaming some of the context menu items in Windows.

1. Customizing Context Menu From Registry Editor
  • Press the “Win + R” keys on the keyboard, on the “Run” utility, type “regedit” and then click “Ok”.
Open Regedit
  • On the “Registry Editor”, click the arrow beside the “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” folder.
Expand Registry Keys
  • Let us say you want to remove a context menu item, like “Open with”. Expand the folder path “* > shellex > ContextMenuHandlers”.
  • Look for the item you want to remove “Open With”, right click it and select “Delete” from the list. This will remove the key, its sub-keys and the option will not appear when you right-click a file.
Remove Item
Adding Context Menu Item
  • Another way to personalize the context menu is to add your own command to facilitate action(s). For instance, we can add a new item “Chrome” on the menu list.
  • Under the “*” or unknown keys, select and right click the “Shell” keys, hover the mouse over “New” and from the expanded options choose “Key”.
Add Key
  • Rename the key to “Chrome” and then repeat the process to create a sub-key for this new key.
  • Rename the sub-key to “Command”.
Add Command
  • Click the created sub-key and on the right-side panel double-click “(Default)” to add the command.
  • Under the “Value data” text box, enter the command you want the item to execute such as path and the name of a program it will execute (in this case path for Chrome) and add the name of the executable file at the end of the command.
Value Data Command
  • Close the registry editor and then right click a file to confirm whether the new entry, “Chrome” displays on the context menu.
Chrome Added
  • If you click it, the Google Chrome browser will open.
2. Add or Remove Item in “Send to” Context Menu
  • You can add or remove an item from the “Send to” menu options.
Send to Context Menu
  • Open “Run” by pressing “Win + R” keys on the keyboard, type “shell: send to” and click “Ok”.
Send to Menu
  • Right click an empty space and go to “New” from the options. Here you have the option to add a program, a new folder or a shortcut to an app or a folder.
  • You can add an option to send a file to a specific contact. Select “Contact”, add the contact and enter the details and then click “Ok”.
Contact Details
  • The new item will be added to the “Send to” menu.
Contact Options
3. Customize Using Third-Party Context Menu Editors
Using the “Registry Editor” can be difficult as you need to know the specific key for a given menu item or the command for the item you need to add. Another simple way is to use trusted third party menu editors for Windows 10. Many free context menu editors enable you to view and edit the items on the menu.

Some of the popular right click menu editors are:
  • Right-Click Extender for Windows.
  • Context Menu Editor for Windows.
  • Ultimate Windows Customizer.
Conclusion
The right click menu provides more commands to help you perform various activities on a given file or program. However, sometimes the menu item may be cluttered with items that you never use or need. Luckily, you can personalize the context menu by adding or removing some of the options either through the Windows Registry Editor, or using free third party software. Either method will give you full control of the context menu option, thus enhance your productivity with Windows 10 / 11.
